Strengthened Support for Teachers and Poll Workers in Halalan 2025: A Move by DepEd

In line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure safe, honest, and orderly elections, the Department of Education (DepEd) has reinforced its support for the thousands of teachers and education personnel who will serve as frontliners in the upcoming National and Local Elections this May 2025.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the vital role of DepEd in safeguarding a fair and peaceful electoral process. He highlighted the department’s active participation in a multi-agency Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), signed in coordination with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and other partner institutions.

Teachers play a crucial role in preserving democracy. In recognition of their bravery and dedication, we are committed to providing them with the support and protection they rightfully deserve,” said Secretary Angara.

Enhanced Legal and Medical Assistance

Under the signed MOA, teachers and DepEd personnel involved in the elections will receive heightened legal and medical support. This includes safeguarding them from any risks related to their duties as election workers.

In collaboration with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), legal aid will be accessible to teachers who face any complaints related to their election service.

Election Task Force Activation

DepEd is set to mobilize its Election Task Force (ETF) across all levels—from the Central Office to Regional and Schools Division Offices. The ETF will provide real-time monitoring, immediate assistance, and swift responses to emerging concerns.

From May 11 to 13, 2025, an Election Command Center will operate at DepEd’s headquarters in Makati City to serve as a coordination hub for nationwide election-related matters.

Coordination with Key Agencies

Each ETF will closely coordinate with COMELEC, the Public Attorney’s Office, and other government agencies to guarantee the protection and rights of teacher-poll workers.

“Just like a command center, we ensure clear roles, readiness to respond, and available legal assistance whenever needed,” Angara added.

Compensation and Protection

Teachers and DepEd personnel will receive honoraria, travel allowance, and compensatory time off (CTO), depending on their employment status and service conditions. Additional incentives and measures are in place to address challenges such as online threats or political pressure.

In anticipation of the election, DepEd also conducted a legal orientation led by Acting Secretary of Justice Atty. Alberto C. Agra, equipping participants with knowledge on their rights and duties as election frontliners.

A Call for Nationwide Support

As the election nears, the Department urges the public and various sectors to stand with teachers in ensuring clean and secure elections.

We must protect every teacher serving in the polls. This is a national effort that must be fully supported,” Angara concluded.
